USE OF LIDAR SENSOR FOR THE GENERATION OF LAYERS OF SPATIAL INFORMATION WITH HYDROLOGICAL APPLICATION

Start date: 21/11/08
Duration: 6
Responsible: Asunción Romero Díaz

Descripción:

One of the basic layers of information when working with a GIS, especially for hydrological modeling, is the Digital Elevation Model. Traditional methods for their creation are contours digitizing and interpolation, direct field surveying methods or photogrammetry.

The most used are contours interpolation, which have the disadvantage that the resulting models tend to have artifacts, especially in areas of low slope, i.e. where information available for the interpolation model is smaller.

Nowadays there is an increasing use of LIDAR sensors (Light Detection and Ranging). This system can discriminate between multiple responses from a single pulse, allowing determining the intermediate surfaces, as power lines or vegetation cover.

MULTI-TEMPORAL ANALYSIS OF LAND USE CHANGES IN THE SEGURA BASIN. 1975-2007 PERIOD

Start date: 21/11/08
Duration: 6
Responsible: Francisco Alonso Sarriá

Descripción:

The basic objective of this project is to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of land use in the Segura basin in the time interval from 1975 to the present and to develop explanatory models of such evolution.

This project will allow the operation of the implemented system "GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory", which main objective was the implementation of a Geographic Information System to support INUAMA and IEA projects. It has been integrated the information derived from the project "Mapping land Use. Evolution of land use in the Segura basin," which overall objective was to generate a series of land use maps of the Segura River Basin since 1975 until now.

ASSESSMENT OF POTENTIAL EVAPOTRANSPIRATION SERIES IN THE LONG TERM FROM DIFFERENT LEVELS OF INFORMATION. IMPLEMENTATION IN THE SEGURA BASIN

Start date: 10/11/08
Duration: 6
Responsible: Victoriano Martínez Álvarez

Descripción:

The project's main objective is to deepen the knowledge of the potential evapotranspiration (ETp) in the Segura basin, determining the most appropriate methodologies to study its spatial and temporal evolution, based on historical meteorological information available in the Basin. From a practical standpoint, the goal is to obtain monthly maps of ETp in the long term by applying the selected methodologies.

This raises the following specific objectives:

1. Local study of ETp using different methodologies and time scales in 50-60 stations in the Segura Basin in the period 2000-2007.

2. Study of temporal and spatial evolution of the ETp in the period 2000-2007, as well as of relations between the various methodologies used.

3. Application of the proposed methodologies.

4. Analysis of the actual evapotranspiration (ETa) on a monthly basis in the Segura River Basin through the implementation and calibration of the complementarity method (complementary relationship-CRAE).

Start date: 29/10/08
Duration: 6
Responsible: Daniel Prats y Joaquín Melgarejo

Descripción:

The overall objective of this project is to understand the current situation and future prospects for reuse in the Region of Murcia and Community of Valencia. To achieve this, the following objectives have been proposed:

1. Inventory of waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) which effluents are currently wholly or partially reused.

2. Treatment applied in each of the WWTPs.

3. Effluent quality in each of the WWTPs.

4. Uses to which water is assigned.

5. Quality-uses assessment.

6. Economic aspects. Cost of water reuse.

7. Study of some meaningful reuse experiences.

8. Inventory of WWTPs in which the reuse is planned in the short or medium term. Water treatment, effluent quality and possible uses.

9. Analysis by regions, demand units, provinces and communities of the current situation and future possibilities.

10. Evaluation of reuse in the studied communities regarding the rest of Spain.

ANALYSIS OF THE VARIABILITY AND TRENDS IN THE FREQUENCY AND MAGNITUDE OF EXTREME PRECIPITATION EVENTS FROM PROJECTIONS OF REGIONAL CLIMATE MODELS: RIVER SEGURA BASIN

Start date: 17/10/08
Duration: 6
Responsible: Sandra García Galiano

Descripción:

The objective of this project is to improve predictions of the impacts of climate change on extreme weather events in the Segura River Basin. The plausible outcome of this project will be information on the interannual, interdecadal and long term variation of maximum precipitation, as a key to developing adaptation strategies. On the other hand, the interdecadal variation of land use in the Segura basin will be analyzed for the same timeframe provided by the climate hindcasts, identifying possible spatial correlations.

INDIVIDUAL BASED MODELING OF ECOSYSTEMS APPLIED TO WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Start date: 10/10/08
Duration: 12
Responsible: Javier Gilabert Cervera

Descripción:

The objective of this project is to evaluate the applicability of individual-based models (IBMs) for the determination of minimum environmental flows. The aim is to compare the results obtained with the IFIM methodology with those obtained using IBMs models. Both simulations will be validated in a field study to resolve any significant discrepancies. Both methodologies will be reviewed in light of the obtained results by changing, if necessary, the aspects that will help to respond to such discrepancies.

USE OF MRS FOR OBTAINING THE HYDRAULIC PARAMETERS AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION IN GROUNDWATER MODELLING: APPLICATION IN THE SURFACE OF AQUIFER OF LOS ARENALES (DUERO BASIN) AND THE ALLUVIAL OF THE VEGA MED

Start date: 25/09/08
Duration: 12
Responsible: José Martínez Fernández

Descripción:

This project proposes to undertake an innovative study which main objective is to obtain hydraulic parameters from a pioneer technique in geophysical prospecting (Magnetic Resonance Sounding). It's about getting these parameters in an efficient, reliable and economical way, with the aim of using them as inputs to a hydrological model which will be used to study the evolution and recharge of aquifers.

The study will be carried out in two sectors of the superficial aquifer of Los Arenales (Duero river basin), and the aquifers related to the Guareña river basin and the Vega Media of Segura river.

TYPING HYDRO- GEO- MORPHOLOGICAL PRELIMINARY WETLANDS IN THE REGION OF MURCIA IN VIEW OF REMEDIATION, CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF ITS HYDROLOGIC FUNCTION

Start date: 26/12/07
Duration: 4
Responsible: Marisol Manzano Arellano

Descripción:

The study objectives are:

1. A first approach to the hydrological classification of wetlands in the Region of Murcia based on hydrological, geological and geomorphological existing data.

The work will lie mainly in collection, integration and intellectual development. It will be done with the existing information, but it will be possible to perform some specific measurements or determinations if there is enough time.

Conceptual models of wetland running will be drawn up and, moreover, reference wetlands will be selected for each model. There will be used the usual principles and methods of international scope that are incorporated in the guiding principles of the Water Framework Directive in Europe, which are based on combining the genesis of the wetland with its functionality (water, in this case). The following aspects will be specifically analyzed: origin and morphological evolution of the watershed, filling and emptying processes of the wetland, hydroperiod, hydrochemistry.

2. Identify the most important hydrological functions of wetlands in the Region of Murcia, as well as goods and ecological and social services that these functions provide.

This task will be performed also with the available information, so will therefore be a first approximation that will be accompanied by an identification of gaps in existing knowledge and information.
