Problem to face. In the last 15 years aggregate water demand has doubled in the Mediterranean, placing enormous pressures on local water supplies. There is a conflict of interest between the high level of water consumption in tourism activities and the need for water resources sustainability. The tourism industry overconsumption of water, twice the average, in addition to inefficient management, bad practices and poor water governance is a tough issue concerning coastal areas. Something is to be done to improve water governance and water sustainability-efficiency in golf courses, hotels, camping grounds, resorts, water parks, and all leisure activities in tourism industry.
The need for CASTWATER. Measuring tourism water effect, promote water saving measures, provide an online tool (software) for self-evaluation of water performance in tourism activities, linking up with and improving relevant policies and water governance at local level.
Strategy and approach. Interregional cooperation: different level of performance, needs and policies. Joint implementation: common monitoring and benchmarking methods and tools. Policy learning: peer-to-peer interregional learning, capacity building for authorities, integration of outcomes into policy actions.
Activities and outcomes. Identification of good practices, elaboration of a list of indicators, development of a software tool to evaluate water performance and governance, workshops for public authorities, communication campaign of best practices and measures, transferability action plans for stakeholders, and the Mediterranean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Water Management.
The Euromediterranean Water Institute Foundation. The IEA Foundation is one of the partners of CASTWATER Project and it is responsible for the Communication campaign activities. Moreover, the Institute is also in charge of validation and fine-tuning of the adapted online tool as well as of hosting the policy workshops for public authorities on sustainable tourism water management.
The partnership. Group of 11 members, mainly local and regional authorities in charge of tourism and water departments, from Greece, Italy (Emilia-Romagna and Veneto), Cyprus, Spain (Murcia and Valencia) France, Croatia and Malta.
